Hoft,
1) I totally agree. The sky was the limit with that team in general. What a great team and a terrible ending.
2) Pargo, of course. I'm going write sometime about how underappreciated he was. I think his flaws as they're understood by Joe Zag Fan (namely that he was a ball hog) were the result of how terribly average the rest of his team was. I miss him terribly every time I watch a Zag game.

GB,
There may be something there, I don't know. But to the people who are just now saying Few might be overrated, I say you should have been paying attention. It's been the same stuff for at least three years.

Edit: I said "terribly" two times in two sentences. That's embarrassing.

Sorry, this comment isn't really related to the post, but I just wanted to throw in something that I've been thinking about:

We should not overlook the impact of losing Leon Rice to BSU. You are probably Few's harshest critic. I often find myself having to flush my eyes out in the sink after reading some of the venom you've directed his way. The head coach doesn't do everything, he just happens to be the one in the spotlight. A major part of the continued success of the program has been the continuity of the coaching staff. Maybe many of Few's coaching deficiencies over the years have been offset by Rice's coaching strengths. This may include, but not be limited to some of the following: motivation, player development, in-game adjustments, etc. These flaws have been exposed this season more than ever. You can argue that we didn't seem to skip a beat when Grier left and Giacoletti came in, but maybe they brought similar things to the table.

I really hope the staff figures it out soon. It's fine if we lose games, but there's no excuse for all of the coaches to give up like they did against WSU. I'd never seen that before, and I hope I never see that again.

This is about the first sensible thing I've read since Wednesday's debacle (and I don't know why I read the comments on guboards and SSF -- I know better but can't look away).

I definitely caught myself doing this with Gray, particularly after the SDSU game. He went off for 36 or so, and I thought, "ah, he's gone into Morrison mode. As he should. This is what Gonzaga stars do." But coming into this year, it seemed reasonable to believe that Harris would be that player, and I'm pretty mystified by what's going on with him.

Two thoughts, though:
1. This theory of the necessity of a great-playmaker is what, to this day, makes the events of 3.23.06 so haunting and painful. With a freak Adam Morrison in a weak-ass tourney field, the sky was the limit.
2. Does this apply to the 2008-2009 team? Who was the playmaker there?
